Which Smart Lock Should You Buy in 2026? Keypad vs Matter

Smart locks finally grew up. The 2026 crop is less about novelty and more about the boring stuff that actually matters: does it connect without a proprietary bridge, does the keypad work with wet fingers in February, and how many months do you get before the AA alarm starts chirping at 3am.

We compared the current lineup from Yale, August, Schlage, Aqara and Level using manufacturer specs, independent lab testing (Consumer Reports and similar outlets), and verified owner feedback across retailers. Here's what's worth your money — and, just as importantly, which type of lock fits your door and your living situation.

Retrofit or full replacement? Answer this first

Everything downstream depends on this one choice.

Retrofit locks replace only the interior thumbturn. Your existing deadbolt, exterior hardware and keys stay exactly as they are. Installation is typically two screws and a mounting plate. The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) is the archetype here, and it remains the default recommendation for renters — nothing about the outside of the door changes, so there's no landlord conversation to have and no hole to patch when you move out. The trade-off: no keypad on the door itself (August sells a separate Smart Keypad), and you're stuck with whatever quality of deadbolt you already own.

Full replacements swap the whole deadbolt, inside and out. That's where you get keypads, fingerprint readers, NFC taps, and higher security ratings. The Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, Schlage Encode Plus and Aqara U100 all live in this camp.

One practical note before you buy anything: measure your door thickness and backset, and check whether your deadbolt is standard-bore. Most locks list a supported range; doors thicker than about 1¾ inches or with unusual hardware often need an adapter kit.

Matter, Thread and Wi-Fi: what actually changes in 2026

Matter is now genuinely useful for locks rather than a spec-sheet checkbox, but the details are fiddly.

  • Built-in Wi-Fi (Schlage Encode Plus, Yale with the Wi-Fi module) means the lock talks to your router directly — no hub, no bridge. It's the simplest path, and it's why "no monthly subscription, no extra box" shoppers keep landing here. The cost is battery life; Wi-Fi radios are hungry.
  • Thread is a low-power mesh network. Thread locks sip battery and respond fast, but they need a Thread border router — an Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, newer Echo, Google Nest Hub or an Aqara hub. If you already own one, Thread is the better technical choice.
  • Matter is the language, not the transport. A Matter-over-Thread lock works across Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa and SmartThings simultaneously. What Matter still does not standardise well: guest-code management, auto-unlock geofencing, and activity logs. Those almost always live in the manufacturer's own app.

So the honest 2026 answer: buy for the manufacturer app you'll actually use daily, and treat Matter as insurance that the lock will still work if you switch ecosystems later.

Keypad vs fingerprint vs phone

Keypads are the most reliable entry method, full stop. They work with gloves off in any weather, they need no phone, and guest codes are trivially easy to hand out and revoke. Every household should have one as a fallback.

Fingerprint readers are faster and better for kids who can't be trusted with codes. Quality varies a lot — the Aqara U100 is among the better implementations, with a reader owners consistently describe as quick and forgiving. Cold, wet or dry hands still degrade performance on every sensor we've seen reported.

Phone-based unlocking splits into two flavours. Auto-unlock via geofencing (August's specialty) is convenient but occasionally triggers late, so you stand at your door for a beat. Tap-to-unlock via NFC — Apple Home Key on the Schlage Encode Plus and Aqara U100, or a key card — is near-instant and far more predictable. If you're in the Apple ecosystem, Home Key is the sleeper feature that changes how you use the lock.

Battery life, realistically

Manufacturer claims assume moderate use. Owner reports paint a consistent picture:

  • Thread/Bluetooth-only locks: often 6–12 months on a set of AAs.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi locks: commonly 3–6 months, sometimes less in cold climates or with weak signal.
  • Retrofit locks like August: generally strong, since they're only driving a thumbturn.

Two things kill batteries faster than anything: a misaligned strike plate that forces the motor to fight the bolt, and weak Wi-Fi at the door. Fix the alignment first — it's free and it fixes most complaints.

How we'd choose

Buy the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch if you want one decision to last. The module system means you can start on Wi-Fi and drop in a Matter-over-Thread module later without touching the door. It's also available in keypad and key-free variants, and independent reviewers repeatedly rank it at or near the top for 2026.

Buy the August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) if you rent, or if you have a deadbolt you like and a door you'd rather not drill. It's the smallest 4th-gen body August has made, and it's the least disruptive smart lock on this list.

Buy the Schlage Encode Plus if security rating and keypad feel matter most. Schlage's deadbolts carry a strong reputation for physical build, and Apple Home Key support makes daily entry a wrist tap.

Buy the Aqara U100 if fingerprint access is the goal — particularly with kids — and you're willing to add an Aqara hub for Matter exposure. Aqara's newer U-series locks (including UWB-equipped models) are pushing the category forward, but the U100 remains the sensible, widely available choice.

Buy the Level Lock+ Connect if you care about how your door looks. Nothing on the exterior betrays that it's smart, which is a real argument on a period front door.

Setup mistakes to avoid

Test the bolt manually before you install anything — if it drags, the motor will too. Use lithium AAs in cold climates. Register a physical backup key or code for every household member. And check your door's signal strength: a Wi-Fi lock two rooms from your router is a support ticket waiting to happen.

FAQ

Do smart locks require a subscription? None of the picks here require one for core functions — unlocking, codes, notifications. Subscriptions only appear for extras like extended activity history or video doorbell integration on some brands.

Are smart locks less secure than regular deadbolts? Physically, a good smart deadbolt uses the same bolt and strike as a traditional one — look for ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 or 2. The added risk is digital, so enable two-factor authentication on the app account and delete old guest codes.

What happens if the batteries die? Most keypad locks warn you for weeks. If you ignore it, full-replacement models with a keyway accept a physical key, and several offer emergency power via a 9V terminal or USB-C contact on the exterior.

Will a Matter lock work with Apple, Google and Alexa at once? Yes — that's the point of Matter. But advanced features like auto-unlock and code scheduling usually still require the brand's own app.

Can I install one myself? Retrofits like the August take about 10 minutes with a screwdriver. Full replacements take 20–40 minutes if your door is standard-bore. Alignment, not wiring, is the part people get wrong.
