Key findings

  • The median portable SSD costs $169.99, but the sample spans $35.95 to $925.39 — roughly a 26x gap between the cheapest and most expensive listing.
  • The average price ($235.46) sits well above the median, a sign that a small number of high-capacity, high-cost drives pull the mean upward.
  • 68% of priced listings (26 of 38) fall in the $36–$258 band. Only 3 listings — 8% — are priced above $481.
  • Brand concentration is high: SANDISK (20%) and Samsung (18%) together account for 38% of the sample, and the top five brands cover 68% of all listings analyzed.
  • Ratings cluster tightly and high: the average rating across 35 rated listings is 4.53 stars.
  • The category is heavily reviewed. The 40 listings carry 504,399 total ratings, with a median of 2,936 ratings per listing.
  • 33% of listings in the results were sponsored placements.

What we found

A cheap middle, a very expensive tail

The single most useful number for a shopper is the median: $169.99. That is the midpoint of the 38 listings in our sample that carried a visible price. Half the market sits below it.

The average, however, is $235.46 — about $65 higher than the median. That divergence is the statistical fingerprint of a right-skewed distribution: most drives are affordable, and a handful of very expensive ones drag the mean. Our price banding confirms it.

Price band Listings Share
$36–$258 26 68%
$258–$481 9 24%
$481–$703 1 3%
$703–$925 2 5%

Two-thirds of the sample lives in the lowest band. The top two bands combined contain just three listings. Practically, this means the "portable SSD" search result is dominated by mainstream 1TB-class drives, with a thin premium shelf of multi-terabyte models — the $925.39 ceiling is more than 5.4x the median price.

Brand concentration: five names, two-thirds of the shelf

Portable SSD listings are not a long tail of anonymous sellers. The five largest brands in our sample account for 68% of listings.

Brand Listings Share
SANDISK 8 20%
Samsung 7 18%
Gigastone 4 10%
Lexar 4 10%
SSK 4 10%
External 1 3%

SANDISK and Samsung alone hold 15 of 40 listings (38%). The presence of three mid-tier names — Gigastone, Lexar and SSK — each at exactly 10% suggests a stable second tier competing largely on price rather than on brand recognition.

One structural caveat: 33% of the listings we captured were sponsored. A third of the visible shelf is paid placement, which means organic ranking alone does not explain what a shopper sees first.

Ratings are high and near-uniform

Across the 35 listings that carried a rating, the average is 4.53 stars. Five listings had no rating at the time of capture, and two had no visible price.

Rating volume is where the differentiation appears. The sample's 504,399 total ratings against a median of 2,936 per listing implies extreme concentration: if every listing had the median count, the total would be a fraction of what we observed. A small number of long-established SKUs carry the bulk of the category's review history, while newer or lower-priced entrants sit near or below the median. For buyers, review count — not review score — is the more discriminating signal in this category, because scores barely move.

Standouts from the dataset

These were selected algorithmically from the 40 analyzed listings by rating and price. BytePlaza did not physically test any drive.

Methodology

  • Sample: 40 current Amazon listings returned for the search term "portable ssd".
  • Source: Analysis of live Amazon marketplace listings. No physical testing was performed. Prices, ratings and rating counts are recorded exactly as listed at capture time.
  • Analyst / date: BytePlaza, captured and analyzed on 2026-08-17.
  • Coverage: 38 of 40 listings carried a visible price; 35 of 40 carried a star rating. Price statistics are computed on the 38 priced listings; rating statistics on the 35 rated listings.
  • Bands: Price bands are equal-width intervals spanning the observed minimum ($35.95) to maximum ($925.39).
  • Limitations: Amazon prices and search rankings change frequently, and 33% of captured listings were sponsored placements. Figures represent a single point-in-time snapshot of one search query, not the full catalogue.

FAQ

What is a typical price for a portable SSD? In our sample, the median is $169.99 and 68% of priced listings fell between $35.95 and $258.

Why is the average price higher than the median? Because a small number of expensive drives — including one at $925.39 — pull the average to $235.46 while most listings sit far lower.

Which brands dominate? SANDISK (20%) and Samsung (18%) lead, followed by Gigastone, Lexar and SSK at 10% each.

Are ratings a useful way to choose? Less than you'd hope. The 4.53-star average across 35 rated listings leaves little spread; rating volume (median 2,936) separates listings more clearly.
