Air fryers stopped being a novelty years ago. The interesting question in 2026 isn't whether you need one — it's whether the Wi-Fi and app connectivity that manufacturers keep bolting on is worth paying for.

The honest answer: sometimes. A smart air fryer that pushes a "flip the food" alert to your phone and lets you drop the temperature from the couch is genuinely useful. A smart air fryer whose app is just a clunkier version of the front panel is not. We compared the leading connected models on app quality, capacity, dual-zone flexibility and — crucially — how good they are as plain old air fryers when the Wi-Fi inevitably drops.

What "smart" actually gets you

Before you pay a premium, understand what connectivity does and doesn't do.

It genuinely helps with:

  • Remote monitoring and adjustment. Start a batch of wings, walk away, and nudge the temperature or add three minutes without standing over the machine.
  • Push notifications. Preheat done, shake reminder, cook complete. If you're the kind of cook who wanders off, this alone justifies the feature.
  • Guided recipes with one-tap cook programs. The better apps send temperature and time straight to the appliance, so you're not squinting at a phone while your hands are covered in flour.
  • Voice control. Alexa and Google Assistant integration is common; it's a party trick most days and quietly handy when your hands are full.

It does not help with:

  • Starting a cook remotely with food already inside. No manufacturer recommends leaving raw food sitting in a basket while you commute home. Treat "remote start" as marketing.
  • Cooking better. Airflow design, wattage and basket geometry determine crispiness. An app changes none of that.

That last point matters most. Buy a smart air fryer that would be a good air fryer even if you never installed the app.

Single basket or dual zone?

This is the real decision, and it's more consequential than connectivity.

Dual-zone models — the Ninja DualZone family being the definitive example — give you two independent baskets with their own temperature, time and cooking mode. The killer feature is Smart Finish, which staggers two different cooks so they end at the same moment. Chicken thighs at 400°F in one basket, Brussels sprouts at 375°F in the other, both done together. If you cook full meals rather than sides, this changes how you use the appliance.

The trade-offs are real: dual-zone units are wide, heavy and awkward to store, and each individual basket is smaller than the total capacity suggests. An 8-quart dual-zone is really two 4-quart baskets.

Single basket models are more compact, easier to clean, and better for one bulky item — a whole small chicken, a tray of fries, a rack of wings in a single layer. The Cosori TurboBlaze 6.0-quart, which several major outlets including Bon Appétit and the Today Show rank at the top of the category, is the archetype: a squat, deep basket that handles a genuinely useful volume of food.

Our rule of thumb: households of one or two, or anyone tight on counter space, should take the single basket. Families of three-plus who cook complete meals should take the dual zone.

How we evaluated

BytePlaza doesn't run a test kitchen. We compare manufacturer specifications, cross-reference independent lab testing from outlets like Serious Eats, CNET, Bon Appétit and Good Housekeeping, and read through verified owner feedback — particularly the one- and two-star reviews, where app reliability problems surface fastest.

We weighted four things: cooking performance in third-party testing, app stability and usefulness, capacity relative to footprint, and cleanability.

The picks

Best overall: Cosori TurboBlaze 6.0-Quart Smart Air Fryer

Cosori TurboBlaze 6.0-Quart Smart Air FryerBest overall · Cosori TurboBlaze 6.0-Quart Smart Air Fryer — Check price on Amazon →

The TurboBlaze earns its reputation on airflow, not software. Cosori's higher-velocity fan and five-speed system produce noticeably faster, more even browning than older generations, and it runs quieter than most competitors — a bigger deal than it sounds when the thing lives on your counter.

The VeSync app is one of the better-executed ones in the category: reliable pairing, a large recipe library that pushes settings to the fryer, and proper notifications. The 6-quart square basket fits more usable food than round baskets of the same nominal volume.

Best for families: Ninja DZ401 Foodi 10-Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL

Ninja DZ401 Foodi 10-Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL Air FryerBest for families · Ninja DZ401 Foodi 10-Quart 6-in-1 DualZone XL Air Fryer — Check price on Amazon →

If you're feeding four or more, the 10-quart DualZone XL is the one to get. Two 5-quart baskets, Smart Finish and Match Cook, and six functions per zone including Air Broil. It is a large appliance — measure your counter and the clearance under your cabinets before ordering.

Worth knowing: the classic Ninja DZ201 8-quart remains widely available and is often the better value if you can live with slightly smaller baskets. Neither of these is Wi-Fi connected in the traditional sense; Ninja's dual-zone strength is on-device intelligence rather than app control. If app connectivity is non-negotiable, look at the Cosori or Instant options below.

Best app experience: Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart with ClearCook and OdorErase

Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart Air Fryer with ClearCook and OdorEraseBest app experience · Instant Vortex Plus 6-Quart Air Fryer with ClearCook and Odo — Check price on Amazon →

Serious Eats has repeatedly ranked Instant's air fryers at the top of the category, and the Vortex Plus is the connected model to buy. The window and interior light let you actually watch food brown — an underrated feature that saves you from opening the drawer every three minutes and dumping heat.

The Instant Brands Connect app handles firmware updates, remote adjustment and guided cooking. Instant's software has been around long enough to be stable, which is not universally true in this category.

Best premium / countertop oven: Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer ProPremium pick · Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro — Check price on Amazon →

If you'd rather have one appliance that replaces a toaster oven, a small oven and an air fryer, this is the consensus choice — Serious Eats calls it the best in its class. Element iQ manages the heating elements per function, and thirteen cooking presets cover everything from dehydrating to roasting. It's a large, expensive, non-connected machine, and the value proposition is that it retires two other appliances rather than adding a third.

Comparison table

Model Type Capacity App control Best for
Cosori TurboBlaze 6.0-Qt Single basket 6 qt Yes (VeSync) Most kitchens; quiet, fast, well-supported app
Ninja DZ401 Foodi DualZone XL Dual basket 10 qt (2 × 5 qt) No Families cooking two dishes at once
Instant Vortex Plus ClearCook Single basket 6 qt Yes (Instant Connect) Watching food cook; the most polished app
Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer Pro Countertop oven ~1 cu ft No Replacing a toaster oven and air fryer together

Buying checklist

  • Measure vertical clearance. Air fryers vent hot air upward and need several inches above them. Under-cabinet spots are often too tight for dual-zone models.
  • Check the basket is dishwasher-safe and whether the nonstick coating has a track record of holding up — owner reviews at the 12-month mark are the useful signal here.
  • Prefer physical controls plus app, not app-only. Touchscreen-only panels are harder to clean and useless if the phone is charging in another room.
  • Wattage matters more than "smart". Most 6-quart models draw around 1,500–1,700 W. Higher wattage plus better airflow means faster preheat and crispier results.
  • Consider noise. Fan noise varies a lot between models and is the most common complaint in long-term owner feedback.

FAQ

Do I actually need Wi-Fi in an air fryer? No. It's a convenience feature. It's worth paying a modest premium for if you value push notifications and remote adjustment; it's not worth choosing a worse-cooking machine to get.

Does the air fryer still work if the app breaks or the servers go down? On every model we recommend, yes — the front panel works independently. Avoid app-only appliances with no local controls, since they become paperweights if support ends.

Is a dual-zone air fryer better than a single large basket? For cooking two things at different temperatures, yes, decisively. For one large item like a whole chicken, a single deep basket wins because each dual-zone drawer is narrower.

What size should I buy? Roughly 4 quarts for one or two people, 5–6 quarts for a small family, 8–10 quarts (or dual zone) for four or more. Nominal capacity overstates usable space, so err larger if the counter allows.

Can I put foil or parchment in an air fryer? Yes, with caveats: never block the airflow holes at the base, and never preheat with loose parchment inside — it can lift into the heating element. Perforated parchment rounds are the safer option.
